20th Anniversary Legacy Program

After twenty years of operation the Office of the Treaty Commissioner is commemorating its anniversary by establishing a Legacy Program. The Legacy Program is intended to be of lasting public education value for the citizens of Saskatchewan and Canada. The Legacy Program will focus on the treaty story of Treaty Land Entitlement, its history, and the impact on First Nations and all people of Saskatchewan. The story of Treaty Land Entitlement is the story of a treaty promise fulfilled, a story filled with benefits for Saskatchewan, a story to celebrate, and a story about which everyone should be knowledgeable. The Legacy Program will have three main components:
1. Commissioning a manuscript and publishing a book documenting the historical account of the events leading up to the Treaty Land Entitlement Agreement. Our intention is to distribute it to all schools in Saskatchewan
2. Develop a three part video with accompanying teachers' guide highlighting Treaty Land Entitlement in Saskatchewan.
3. A permanent display at the office of the Treaty Commissioner in Saskatoon. The display will highlight the importance of the treaties and the Treaty Relationship in building a prosperous Saskatchewan and Canada.

Need Your Own Treaty Kit?
The Office of the Treaty Commissioner is pleased to present a chance for you to win a treaty kit. We want you to design an original classroom activity to share with K-12 teachers based on The Teaching Treaties in the Classroom resources. Include your name, the name of your activity, grade level, theme, topic, materials needed and procedure for your classroom activity. Photos would be great to see too! All activities will be posted on our OTC Treaty Teacher Wikispace to share with other treaty teachers. For ideas on where to start visit the OTC Treaty Teacher Wikispace Make n' Take activities. The deadline for submissions is January 29, 2010. Submissions or questions may be emailed here.
Treaty Catalyst Teachers
Since the Province has made Treaty Education mandatory, the Ministry of Education is supporting the Office of the Treaty Commissioner in increasing the capacity of schools to provide supports to all teachers as they endeavor to teach treaties. Therefore, the OTC is providing training to representatives from all schools/divisions in the province. These representatives are called Treaty Catalyst Teachers and their primary role is to provide leadership and expertise at the school/division level in the support of their colleagues as they attempt to teach treaties.
Catalyst Teachers are identified by their school/division and should be willing to:
1. Teach Treaties in their classroom.
2. Support other teachers who teach Treaties in their classrooms.
3. With Elders and OTC, provide Treaty awareness workshops for teachers.
4. Contribute to the further development of classroom materials on Treaties.
5. Serve as the school/division contact for the Office of the Treaty Commissioner.
6. Provide leadership in their school/division with respect to treaty education.
