On Oct. 20, the Equatorial South Sudan Association in Saskatoon hosted a Meet Your Indigenous Neighbours event.

Harry Lafond, executive director of the office of the Treaty Commissioner, attended and he said from the moment he stepped into the venue, everyone was struck by the welcome we received.

“The dress of the South Sudan people impressed everyone,” he said.

After welcoming comments from a number of dignitaries, Lamarr Oksasikewiyin from the OTC Speakers’ Bureau presented on the culture of the Indigenous people and a lesson on the importance of Treaty 6.

“By then everyone was hungry and the hosts invited Elder Nora Ledoux from Muskeg Lake to ask for blessings on the feast. The food was different and a true culinary adventure for us. Shortly this was followed with dancing and singing South Sudan style,” Harry said.

“Terrific Reconciliation event as only Saskatoon citizens can provide.”
