OTC witnesses creation of first urban reserve dedicated to education

The Office of the Treaty Commissioner was pleased to attend a historic event on Wednesday in the Veteran’s Memorial Tipi at First Nations University of Canada’s Regina Campus.

A signing ceremony with Star Blanket Cree Nation and First Nations University of Canada created the first urban reserve in Canada specifically for education. The reserve is named atim kâ-mihkosit, for a former chief of the Cree Nation.

Dignitaries at the event included: Assembly of First Nations Chief Perry Bellegarde, Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations Chief Bobby Cameron, Indigenous Services Canada Minister Seamus O'Regan, and Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale.
