At a community event on Wednesday, Reconciliation Saskatoon had their annual media launch, kicking off a month of Reconciliation events leading up to the annual Rock Your Roots Walk for Reconciliation happening June 21 – on National Aboriginal Day.

The media launch started with the Wild Horse drum group first singing an honour song for residential school survivors and moving on to a victory song to celebrate successes.

“I've never seen such progress ... as I've seen in last 3 years, but we can't rest on our laurels,” said residential school survivor Eguene Arcand, at the launch.

He spoke alongside Saskatoon Tribal Council Chief Felix Thomas, Office of the Treaty Commissioner executive director Harry Lafond, and the moderator of the United Church of Canada, Jordan Cantwell.

Saskatoon mayor Charlie Clark asked people to start challenging their colonial thinking.

“Reconciliation is about turning our country from 500 years of colonization,” he said.

Neal Kewistep, Reconciliation Saskatoon member, representing the Saskatoon Health Region, moderated the event.
