The Witness Blanket was created by carver Carey Newman to recognizes the atrocities of the Indiana residential school era, to honour the children and symbolize ongoing reconciliation.

The original is a cedar-framed work inspired by a woven blanket and includes hundreds of objects recovered from 77 communities across Canada where residential schools were located.

The original is currently undergoing restoration before being put on display at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg.

The replica is photographs of that original, set up as the Witness Blanket is when on display, and is travelling through Canada.

The powerful artwork is at the Chapel Gallery in North Battleford until Feb. 9.

Some our staff have visited the Witness Blanket at the gallery and even the replica is beautiful and creates an opportunity to think and have genuine discussion.
