The Office of the Treaty Commissioner was pleased to celebrate the 135th anniversary of Treaty 6A 1889 at Montreal Lake Cree Nation.

At the invitation of Senator Allan Bird Memorial School Principal Simon Bird, the OTC set up an information booth; Treaty Timeline; and a display on our Treaty Highway Signs project in the school gym.

Teron Roberts from Lac La Ronge Indian Band brought his historical Treaty Six adhesion documents to display and share.

The day included a Treaty Six re-enactment done by the students and two teachers, all in costumes. There were also speakers including, Montreal Lake Cree Nation Chief Joyce McLeod, Lac la Ronge Indian Band Chief Tammy Cook-Searson, FSIN Vice-Chief Dutch Lerat and FSIN Vice-Chief Craig McCallum.

“It was nice to listen to the speakers about how important it is to remember these dates and to gather, to educate our kids who are there and be there for them,” said Morgan Esperance, OTC team member.

The entertainment included a hoop dancer named Burton Bird who was amazing and showed grace in his dancing. There were also students who danced the heel toe polka for us. Then they grabbed a partner from the crowd to dance with them.

The traditional lunch included moose nose, moose tongue, stew, potatoes, vegetables and pasta salad
