The Office of the Treaty Commissioner was heartened to receive cards from a reconciliation project from the Vanscoy Early Learning Centre.
The children at the centre made special birthday cards for elders that never got to celebrate their birthdays when they were at residential schools.
The note from the school read, “Could you please hand them to the elders and send our love to them.”
During their time in residential school many children were not able or allowed to celebrate their birthday. During the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions hearings, they held a birthday party to celebrate those that were missed by children who attended residential schools. This celebration of missed birthdays has continued today around Orange Shirt Day, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Sept. 30.
