At the Office of the Treaty Commissioner we have been noticing more and more Indigenous actors and actresses from the Treaty Territories of what is now Saskatchewan having great success in Hollywood and beyond.

We want to share some of them with you, with information on where you can learn more and have a chance to watch them.

Joel D. Montgrand is from Sandy Bay and spent a lot of his youth in La Ronge and Prince Albert. He is a member of Peter Ballentyne Cree Nation. You can see him as Eddie Qavvik in True Detective: Night Country, which is the fourth season of the series, as well as the 2020 Canadian drama film Beans.

Meadow Kingfisher is a 13-year-old from Sturgeon Lake First Nation. She played Mel, an Indigenous character in Builder Brothers Dream Factory, a show for preschool-aged children and now you can check her out as young Katara in the hit Netflix Series: Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Brett Mooswa is from Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation and became popular with his "Indigenously Indigenous" comedy skits on TikTok. Now you can catch him in the TV series The Curse alongside Emma Stone.
Sask. Indigenous content creator makes major TV debut

Marcel Petit is multidisciplinary Métis artist who has made short dramas, feature documentaries, and photography has been featured in multiple publications. You can see him in the 2007 film Pathfinder.

Harlan Blayne Kytwayhat is from Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation and grew up in Meadow Lake. In the science fiction action film Prey, (the 5th installment of the Predator series), he plays Itsee. You can watch him in the film on Disney Plus.

Cheyenna Sapp is from Little Pine First Nation and was an Indigenous studies student at the University of Saskatchewan when she started stand up comedy. This led to her being cast in  “Acting Good,” an APTN Original and CTV Comedy series set in the fictional fly-in community of Grouse Lake First Nation in Northern Manitoba.

Actor Sera-Lys McArthur, from Pheasant Rump Nakota Nation, is the voice behind a character called Thunderbird, a medic and a helicopter pilot, in the video game Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege. You can also catch her in the television shows Outlander and Burden of Truth, and in the 2022 film Broken Angel.

Michael Greyeyes, originally from Muskeg Lake Cree Nation, has been acting for three decades. He’s known for his roles on the series Fear The Walking Dead, True Detective, and I Know This Much Is True, and for being in films like Dance Me Outside. More recently you could catch him on Rutherford Falls, a sitcom with Native American management and creative control, where he plays Terry Thomas, the CEO of the fictional Minishonka casino. He championed a book in the 2023 CBC Canada Reads

Taylor Kinequon, is from Day Star First Nation and grew up in Regina. She studied in Vancouver at UBC (see her commencement speech here). You can watch her in the suspense thriller Cold Road, with it’s all Indigenous cast and crew, and in the soon to be released film The Great Salish Heist.
