Heart of Treaty 6 Reconciliation Circle met in September in historic Frenchman Butte.

Rhett Sangster, the Office of the Treaty Commissioner’s director Reconciliation and Community Partnerhips was there for the welcoming new members from Turtleford, Paradise Hill, Loon Lake and the RM of Mervin.

“Our shared history was all around us, meeting in the Legion Hall, just kilometres from Fort Pitt, where Treaty 6 was entered into in 1876, and the site in 1885 of a battle between Cree warriors fighting under the command of Wandering Spirit and Canadian Militia troops commanded by General Strange,” he said.

According to the Trails of 1185 website, Frenchman Butte marks the spot of the armed battle of 1885 between Plains Cree warriors fighting under the leadership of War Chief Wandering Spirit, and the Canadian Militia troops commanded by General Strange.

“It's beautiful country and the Frenchman Butte Museum and Teahouse is worth a trip! They have an old jacket of Louis Riel! Thanks to our hosts, the RM of Frenchman Butte and Rivers West District,” Rhett said.
