South Saskatchewan Community Foundation took a closer look at Reconciliation through a Vital Conversation on Oct. 4, 2017.
That conversation on Pursuing Reconciliation was designed to educate on Reconciliation and engage participants to share knowledge and stories while gathering information for the 2018 Vital Signs report.
What they heard was important, said Karen Henders, acting executive director for the community foundation.
The conversation around Reconciliation began after seeing the interest in community health and wellbeing with the release of the 2016 report.
“It falls within the theme of community belonging,” she said.
“This came out as one of the key areas identified.”
According to the report from the Vital Conversation, participants said there is an opportunity to learn more and work together to make important changes.
One person is quoted in the report as saying, “I want my children and grandchildren to bring home friends who don’t look like them.” Another said, “Relationships require understanding and respect. Education is key.”
The report also looks towards building a strategy to make their hopes for the future a reality. These include, leadership, education beginning at an early age, resources being put in place to support the calls to action, and collaboration across the city.
