Workshop Descriptions

The History of Treaty Making – Day One
This workshop is designed to increase knowledge, enhance individual self-awareness and strengthen skills for any professional working in Saskatchewan.  The workshop focuses on the history of  Treaties made in what is now Saskatchewan. The day begins with a jigsaw activity where participants work in groups.  A First Nation’s Elder talks about her/his life experiences under the Indian Act, cultural teachings and contemporary issues. A treaty teacher leader (TTL) will be present to discuss her/his duties and how a TTL can be of assistance within their school and school division. Some resources from the Treaty Kit are utilized to model how they can be used in the classroom.

Teaching Treaties in the Classroom – Day Two
The objective of this workshop is to become familiar with the resources and materials used to teach Treaties.  A First Nation’s Elder will talk about her/his traditional teachings and cultural worldview. A brief look at the Treaty resource materials in the K – Grade 12 Treaty Resource Kit is followed by an activity on the Treaty Essential Learnings (TELs).  The teachers will be asked to develop a lesson plan for immediate use in their respective classrooms.  Teachers share the lessons with the group.  A Treaty Teacher Leader will be present to assist teachers as they explore internet sites and resources.  Resources from the Treaty kit will be used throughout the workshop.

Treaty Catalyst Teacher Workshops – Days Three and Four
The objective of these workshops is to give the teachers more exposure to First Nation Elders and their specific traditional teachings according to the oral traditions of Treaty (Cree, Dene, Nakota and Saulteaux).  The teachers work in small and large groups to review and share Treaty resources with each other.  Topics of discussion include tips on facilitation and Q and A on specific contemporary issues and concerns.

Please note:  Day One- History of Treaty Making, and Day Two- Teaching Treaties in the Classroom are prerequisite to the Days Three and Four, Treaty Catalyst Teacher Training .  The full four day training will earn an OTC  Certification to deliver Day One and Day Two within their schools, Tribal Councils or School Divisions
